I started out, like most, supervising interns in 2003. By 2007, I was working as a clinical supervisor. I really enjoy supervising. I love watching the growth of interns and newly graduated as they become more confident.
I have primarly worked in community mental health, as well as residential and outpatient settings. I am experienced in working with all ages, providing individual, family, and group therapy.
My social work background and training helped me to understand that therapy and social justice are intertwined. Imagine a world where people are supported to be true to themselves, where people are not judged or persecuted for how they look or who they love. How might that shift our understanding of mental health? How might that change the struggles people encounter?
There are often very challenging decisions we must make as therapists, and the ethics of our professions provide us with a framework to follow that isn't always apparent at first. Mandatory reporting, duty to warn, conflicts of interest - these are ethical dilemmas that we encounter and must approach with full recognition of our own biases.
I believe that our clients often come to us with wisdom and understanding about their struggles that we can support them in acknowledging. Clients have goals, desires, hopes, and burdens that must be honored and upheld. Supervision provides us with the opportunity to explore how our hopes for them and our goals for ourselves may get in the way of supporting our clients.
